Developing a sense of professionalism with Jacob Farrell: Summer Student Internship

23 Aug 2023
Commerce and classics student Jacob Farrell is a legal assistant at Appleby Picco Law through the Experiential Learning & Career Development Internship Program at Mount Allison.

1 — What are you enjoying most about your internship?

I feel so lucky to be exposed to so much in an industry I am so passionate about. My supervisor and colleagues have done a really great job of trying to expose me to all levels of law, so I am able to figure out what part of law I want to pursue in the future. Since law is such a diverse career, you can do so many different things with it, and trying to figure out where you want to be is the first step. So, I've been really enjoying being exposed to all sorts of law before I graduate.

2 — What knowledge and skills are you developing?

I am developing a sense of professionalism that I do not think I had before. I am learning a lot about how you need to present yourself in front of clients that I have not learned directly in my courses so far in my university career. I think I will take this idea of professionalism and bring it to all my classes moving forward as it is such an important soft skill that people do not often get taught.

3 — How has this internship impacted your university experience?

This internship has made me appreciate the University so much more! I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to receive real-world skills and experiences in a field I want to pursue, all before I graduate. It doesn’t only allow me to view my courses differently, but also my extracurricular activities. Now, when I go and look at new activities on campus, I think I am going to look at them with a new lens.

4 — What has this experience shown you about potential career paths?

It has opened my eyes to different areas of law that I didn't realize I was interested in. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer, but I always said that I never wanted to do criminal law. Since I've started working here, and I have been involved in criminal cases, it's become something I am really interested in. This internship has made me realize that I don't need to put myself in a box and that I may potentially be able to open myself up to do a little bit of everything.

5 — What have you learned about what fuels your fire?

I love the idea that every day is an opportunity to learn something new. I have also learned that I thrive in an environment that is fast paced and intense. I strive to be a lifelong learner and I want to acquire as much knowledge as I can everywhere I go.
