The Mounties: Kara Anthony
Fourth-year Women鈥檚 Hockey Mountie Kara Anthony followed in her dad Malcom鈥檚 (鈥82) footsteps when choosing Mount Allison. She visited Mount Allison on an East Coast tour of universities and fell in love with the campus and the community.
The 5鈥9鈥 right-winger has been skating for as long as she can remember. She started playing hockey at the age of five, just like her older brother. After a number of years on co-ed teams, she moved into women鈥檚 hockey. She played for her school team at The Bishop Strachan School in Toronto from the time she was in Grade 8.
She says being a student-athlete has meant a lot to her Mount Allison experience.
"Balancing academics, athletics, extracurriculars, and a social life can be tough, but it has helped me manage my time and be more organized,鈥 she says.
Along with hockey, Anthony is also involved in Mounties in Motion, where she tutors at Marshview Middle School and is on Varsity Council. She played golf for Mount Allison鈥檚 club team for two years.
She recalls her standout sporting moments as winning the championship with her high school in Grade 11 and playing in the AUS Championships with the Mounties in her second year.
鈥淚t was such a great experience to pack the rink in Sackville,鈥 she says.
Anthony had one goal and one assist during a 4-1 win over UPEI on January 9 and one goal during a 4-3 win over StFX on January 10. She was named Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
鈥淢y favourite part about playing hockey is the adrenaline I feel every time I get on the ice,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檝e always been the underdog, so I go out there to prove myself."
Anthony is studying psychology and art history and plans to pursue a career in sports marketing.
