Chemistry and Biochemistry 2019 Reunion
Kindly submitted by the department head, Dr. Andrew Grant

This past September, during Homecoming Weekend, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hosted a very successful reunion of former graduates of both programs. Some 40-plus chemists and biochemists ventured back to campus to talk about former times, reconnect with former faculty and staff, and help celebrate Dr. Barclay鈥檚 90th year.

The weekend started on the Thursday night with a wine and cheese reception in Tweedie Hall. There were lots of smiles and hugs as alumni who hadn鈥檛 been back to campus in years looked upon familiar faces.

Friday saw a very busy schedule of talks in Barclay鈥檚 Cragg Resource Centre, beginning with an acknowledgement of the original Indigenous custodians of the land on which Mount Allison is built.

We are extremely grateful that Sarah Dobrowolski (鈥07), Kelly Dakin-Hache (鈥91), Tony Wu (鈥72), Bruce Balcom (鈥85), Emerson Sanford (鈥64), Sandy Briggs (鈥75), Leann Groswald (鈥07), Taylor Brooks (biology 鈥15), Dave Hiltz (鈥91), Stephen Ball (鈥00), Aalim Weljie (鈥96), Heather Spinner (鈥00), Tracy Morkin (鈥96), Ernest Awoonor-Williams (鈥14), Dave Norman (鈥01), Stephen Locke (鈥83), and Abby-Jo Payne (鈥14) all managed to come back to tell the rest of us how Mount A influenced and informed their life and scientific careers since graduating.

Dr. Barclay鈥檚 great friend and former colleague, Dr. Tito Scaiano from the University of Ottawa, gave an engaging 鈥減lenary鈥 lecture entitled, Design and implementation of novel materials for heterogeneous photocatalysis. We were also treated to a fascinating display of pictures and information on the history of the department put together by University Archivist David Mawhinney. Thank you David!

A reunion banquet was held in the newly-renovated Windsor Grand Room, with many current students, former professors, and staff in attendance. Many of us met for brunch at Mel鈥檚 Saturday morning and then walked through the Waterfowl Park. In the afternoon we joined with the rest of Homecoming and attended the football game, where we watched the Mounties teach StFX a lesson by beating them 36-11!

I鈥檇 like to thank all the students who helped organize the reunion, as well as Marcie (Meekins 鈥12) and Eric (Donovan). It is a real pleasure to have been in contact with many graduates from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s; David Nickerson (鈥48), Tom Edgett (鈥49) (now deceased), Douglas Carson (鈥58), Marguerite Ashworth (鈥58), Helen Foote (鈥64), Mike Shreve (鈥66), Carolyn Munro (鈥69), Bill Briggs (鈥78), Helen Graves Smith (鈥86), and Krista Hopson (鈥96), to name a few. I can report that the current members of the department were very appreciative of all who attended. Stay tuned for something similar in the future, where we will give a push for more biochemists to return to campus.
