The following is a list of awards and prizes open to Department of Philosophy students.
The Chase-Oxley Prize
2023 winners: Hannah Clarke, Evan Laurence , Sadie Shelly, Matya Stavinsky
The Chase-Oxley Prize is awarded annually to a first-year student in the Philosophy sections of the 1600 Series deemed by class standing and the assessment of the Department to be worthy of recognition.
The Lisson Memorial Prize
2023 winners: Meg Braemen, Lee Thomas Johnson
The Lisson Memorial Prize was established by the members of the Department in memory of Rev. Stephen Lisson who graduated with Honours in Philosophy in 1981. It is awarded to a second-year student deemed by class standing and the assessment of the Department to be worthy of recognition.
The Treash Memorial Prize
2023 winners: Lindsay Jackson, Suchet Mittal, Susanne Sevcik
The Treash Memorial Prize was established in memory of Dr. G. Treash who taught Philosophy at Mount Allison from 1966 to 1999. It is awarded to a third-year philosophy student deemed by class standing and the assessment of the Department to be worthy of recognition.
The Stanway Award
2023 winners: Benjamin Hebert, Crystal Sharpe
The Stanway Award in Philosophy was established in memory of Dr. R. Stanway who directed the Philosophy program for 25 years and taught at Mount Allison from 1960 to 1999, and his father, Rev. E.A. Stanway, who graduated with Honours in Philosophy in 1928. This award is granted annually to the graduating student who has demonstrated the highest achievement in completing the Philosophy program.
Allison Heartz Johnson Scholarship
Not awarded in 2023
This scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of Allison Heartz Johnson by his family. Allison Johnson was graduated from 痳豆TV视频 with an Honours degree in Philosophy in 1931. It is to be awarded to a senior student in Philosophy or to a student recently graduated from 痳豆TV视频 in Philosophy and currently enrolled in a graduate studies program in Philosophy at Mount Allison or at another institution. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Philosophy Department. It is not necessarily awarded each year.
The Nelson-Littlejohns Award in Philosophy, Ethics and Religion
2023 winners: Alex Dool, Weylin Smith
Call for Student Proposals (Deadline Friday, March 22, 2024)
The Nelson-Littlejohns Award is intended for a student or students enrolled in second or third year of studies within the Departments of Philosophy or Religious Studies at 痳豆TV视频. The award will be used to support experiential learning and used to pay for activities such as travel costs to deliver a conference paper or take part in a workshop or other initiatives.
To apply, please submit a one-page proposal describing your project idea, including your name and year-of-standing (and the same for any co-applicants), and a short projected budget. Applications may be submitted to Angela Thibodeau, room 112, Hart Hall.
